Working capital as a growth engine
Strong companies often have a smart approach to working capital. Kris cited several examples from the listed world, including the impressive story of AB InBev. By imposing significantly longer payment terms on their suppliers, they completely turned their working capital structure around and generated hundreds of millions of euros in extra cash flow.

This approach is not without criticism, especially regarding SMEs that are put under pressure as a result. However, it demonstrates how fundamental working capital management has become. Where the focus used to be primarily on turnover and margins, cash is now intensively monitored and managed. Companies with a sharp eye on their working capital gain a competitive advantage, especially now that cheap money is a thing of the past.
Technology and common sense
Digitization, AI, and automation are drastically changing the financial playing field. Yet, critical thinking remains essential. Kris shared how a simple formula error in an Excel model led to a fictitious cash inflow, and how those kinds of blunders occur even in professional contexts.

AI is increasingly being used for rapid analysis, summaries, and processing large flows of information. But the value lies in the interpretation. According to Kris, analysts and CFOs must prove their added value right now through insight, context, and experience. Technology is there to empower them, not to replace them.
The evolution of the CFO: from number cruncher to strategic leader
The modern CFO is no longer just the person who talks to the banks or guards the budget. Today, he or she is the CEO’s right hand, responsible for strategy, IT, risk management, and process optimization. Kris describes the CFO as the one who keeps their feet on the ground when the CEO’s head is already in the clouds.

A good CFO anticipates setbacks, spreads risks, and guards financial health with a view toward sustainable growth. A CFO who remains stuck in the details often blocks the company’s progress. The real impact lies in maintaining the overview, being able to challenge choices, and creating space for long-term thinking.
